Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute (La Jolla, California) created a vaccine that has as main function to neutralize the effect of cocaine in mice and are preparing a version suitable for humans. In the laboratory model, the vaccine provided immunity to mice for a period of 13 weeks.

“Our very dramatic results show that we can protect mice from the effects (addictive) of cocaine, and we believe these ranges are very promising in the fight against addiction in humans,” said the director of research, Ronald Crystal.

The vaccine works as follows: create antibodies that neutralize the effects of cocaine that create addiction. This drug has the property to exceed the regular flow of blood and accumulates in the brain that creates a feeling of ecstasy that lasts several minutes. A co-researcher, Kim Jandra, said the vaccine “suppresses the stimulatory effects of cocaine.” He emphasized to clarify that the vaccine blocks the effects of cocaine before it reaches the brain.

Jandra said the vaccine would be ‘extremely useful for the treatment of cocaine addiction crack, which has the highest rate of relapse’ among patients in addiction treatment to stop. It is considered that crack is one of the most addictive version of cocaine, consumption of which is banned in several countries like the United States.

The vaccine Jandra has developed since the 90′s makes cocaine ‘outsider’ to the immune system develops antibodies that neutralize the stimulating action, that creates the addiction.

Although there is a long way to go before the vaccine can be marketed, it is expected that this discovery may represent a breakthrough in fight addiction, and it would work not only with cocaine but with other addictive as nicotine and methamphetamine.

The discovery could pave the way for developing new methods for the treatment of addiction.

The scientists used positron emission tomography, or PET, to measure brain metabolism of mice deficient in the dopamine transporter, and their normal siblings. In this technique, the researchers administered glucose (the chief brain fuel) radioactively labeled and used the PET scanner to track its concentration in different brain regions. Mice were examined before and after cocaine administration, and compared the results with those obtained in mice treated with saline instead of drugs.

After cocaine administration, cerebral metabolism was reduced in both groups of mice, but more significantly in normal.

The reduction was observed in many brain regions, probably because cocaine blocks the dopamine transporters. However, we also observed a reduction in metabolism in the thalamus region of the transporter-deficient mice. This effect is possibly due to the effect of cocaine on other neurotransmitter systems, such as serotonin or the norepinephrine.

In summary, the disorders on brain activity caused by cocaine are due, largely, to its action on dopamine, but also, to a lesser extent, its effect on norepinephrine or serotonin.

This finding will allow deeper into the understanding of the mechanism of cocaine addiction.

Cocaine, a stimulant, mimics the effects of chemicals produced in the brain to send messages of pleasure, reward center in the brain. Like adrenaline, cocaine increases heart rate, blood pressure and respiration rate. Feelings when arousal is too high, anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, and anger can produce progress on the potentially fatal attacks and stroke.

Treatments for Drug addiction vary on many factors including the severity and duration of symptoms, the amount of damage caused by cocaine, and recovery. The most common symptoms of addiction are generally noted the desire for drugs, irritability, loss of energy, depression, anxiety, tremors want too much or insomnia, nausea and palpitations, sweating, hyperventilation, increased appetite and sleep. These symptoms can usually take several weeks – even after cessation of cocaine.

Drugs for treating cocaine addiction are not yet available, although researchers are working feverishly to identify and test new features. The drug appears to be promising experimental selegiline force still needs an appropriate method of administration. Disulfiram, a drug used to treat alcoholism, has proved to be somewhat “effective in the treatment of cocaine abuse during clinical trials. Antidepressants are prescribed primarily to treat mood swings, usually cocaine withdrawal. Treatments have been developed to deal with an overdose of cocaine.

Edits, such as cognitive behavioral skills to adapt to be effective in treating cocaine addiction, but there are only a short-term approach that focuses on the learning process. Behavioral therapy to help patients recognize, prevent and treat conditions that lead to use cocaine again.

This treatment is dedicated doctors, nurses and therapists, treatment programs to recognize the severity of addiction. On the basis that treatment programs provide well-documented medical techniques, the best choice for patients of all types of treatment available.

Apart from other physical and psychological in nature, since it acts by modifying the circuits responsible for reward and pleasure, so that ordinary consumers gradually cease to experience pleasure naturally (with sex, food …), hence that this substance is so addictive.

It has been shown that even a non-daily consumption, and in small amounts in the brain produces a certain dose of tolerance and signs of addiction.

In this way consumers weekend you can see a tendency to believe that they have control because they do not perceive the problem. It also found that alcohol consumption is mixed with what the body produces as etinol cocaine and whose toxic effects and the brain are even more harmful.

In the medium and long-term conflict that triggers the use of cocaine are problems in brain functioning that may manifest in mental disorders like paranoid ideas (of persecution, grandeur) or depreseión, boxes and trigger schizophrenia and psychosis, and problems in the circulatory, respiratory, and gastrointestinal and neurological level.

The so-called rebound effect produced by the augend suppression can lead to irritability, drowsiness, depression etc.

Treatments to overcome cocaine addiction have been multiplied by 4 since 2000. This growing demand is partly to ensure that consumers are nonetheless aware of the risks involved.

What is it?

Although often thought of addiction as a matter of will and were blamed for those affected only have to leave, the truth is that this is a disease, which comes in part motivated which often is accompanied by strong support from those around the addict.

And besides we are talking about the drug has produced biochemical changes in the brain of the patient and therefore effects are felt not only psychological but also physical (beyond the control of the patient), especially during the withdrawal syndrome that is the most feared, but for which there are options for treatment to help send.

Recovery Process

What is important to know from the start is that addiction to cocaine has no cure and that this involves a processing fee that ranges from react features

- The diagnostic, which takes into account the biological, psychological and social problems surrounding the issue, this part is crucial to distinguish this from other associated problems such as addictions to other substances such as alcohol and so on.

After that what we usually do is:

- Detoxify the body of the substance (for which it is sometimes necessary hospitalization). When this has been achieved, we must be clear what this means brain damage have no chemicals necessary for normal operation, especially dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the nervous system responsible for functions such as behavior, cognition, motor activity, motivation and reward, attention, learning, sleep or mood … because it has been replaced by cocaine, and to suppress the body that is produced is the syndrome abstinence: are conditions that present with symptoms often opposite to the effects of cocaine: depression, insomnia or hypersomnia, fatigue, irritability, agitation and psychiatric disorders.

At this point, some of the therapies are limited to control these symptoms of withdrawal, but what really matters is:

- Reset the brain damage that have occurred, especially in serotonergic and dopaminergic systems, this has been called neuroadaptation: This process is achieved through advanced drug treatment for which acts on brain receptors and systems and structures like the ventral tegental area (VTA), the core acumbbens and prefrontal cortex are also associated with withdrawal.

This will prevent the onset of withdrawal symptoms, thereby achieving one hand to control the intense desire to consume and yet cocaine are restored restoring parts of the brain affected cognitive and affective processes, recuperate calmness, attention span, among other issues essential to restore the lost equilibrium.

This should be subeditor under a team of professionals who make it possible to recover both physically and psychologically, combining drug treatments and cognitive-behavioral therapy, individually and collectively.
